Last night some I joined some co-workers for a dinner out in Northbridge at Shadow Wine Bar, which is, as it name so specifically imparts, a wine bar. Yep. Lots a wine here.
Located a mere ten minute walk from my office near Murray Street, SWB (as I will now call it), is definitely in a too cool for school location at the "bottom" of Northbridge. The decor is all dimly lit, jazz club vibe with chilled music and a lot of wine. Oh and also the longer you stay the dimmer the lighting gets. I swear this was not a side affect of the wine drinking.
The menu is pretty stylish, with a selection of small starter dishes (none of which we tried!) and "plates" which are your mains. I ended up opting for the Gnocchi with spinach and Cream Parmesan sauce. And of course a glass of chardonnay, which disappointingly there was only the one to choose from on the dinner menu. Despite there being alot of wine about.
The food was lovely, well as lovely as gnocchi can be. For me gnocchi as a dish is such a hit & miss, and this usually has nothing to do with the restaurant serving it, just when I can't decide what to eat I end up with gnocchi (or risotto) and usually eye the duck confit (or similar) lovingly with regret. The mains were pretty good sizes, I was full before finishing mine, but a big eater may be disappointed. Pricing was pretty good, within the $25-45 AUD range per plate.
As we had all opted to drink vastly different wines from each other we all decided to order by the glass. This can be expensive with my chardonnay weighing in at $10 AUD per glass (ouch!) and the wait staff always at the ready to top up your glass. No seriously, they're just there suddenly... like wine ninjas.
- For: Classy dinner with hip friends and wine buffs. Possible romantic dinner (if you don't mind the very attentive wait staff).
- Not: If you want a well lit family restaurant type vibe (definitely not a kid friendly zone - thank god lol), or are into relaxed out pub style fare.
